Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, has become a co-founder and one of the executives of the AI startup Project Prometheus. The company has already secured $6.2 billion in funding, according to reports from The New York Times.

This marks Bezos’s first operational role since leaving his position as CEO of Amazon in 2021. He is now entering direct competition with giants such as Google, Meta, and OpenAI.

Project Prometheus aims to develop AI technologies for the real economy, focusing on engineering and manufacturing in the aerospace, computing, and automotive industries.

The goal is to create models that learn from real-world data rather than relying solely on text from the internet, like large language models (LLMs).

The second co-founder and co-CEO is Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist who previously worked at Google’s research lab, Google X. He was also one of the founders of Verily and led the Foresite Labs incubator.

Bajaj has updated his profile on LinkedIn, but the startup’s page only features a brief description: «AI for the physical economy.»

Sources indicate that the team has already hired around 100 employees, including researchers from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta.

The startup is entering a crowded AI market. Elon Musk, who is also developing his own project, xAI, was among the first to react to the news, tweeting, «Ha-ha, no way,» implying direct imitation.

Notably, in August, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman stated that the AI sector is experiencing a bubble.

In November, Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that no company is immune to a potential collapse in the artificial intelligence market.
