Avtotor Unveils Remotored Electric VAZ-2101, Transforming Classic Cars for a Modern Era

The Kaliningrad automotive assembly plant «Avtotor» has showcased a remotorized version of the VAZ-2101 running on electric power. In addition, the company introduced an electric vehicle based on the Kia Magentis. Both prototypes were displayed at the Kazan Truck Expo 2025 held on February 27th.

«Avtotor» offers the option of removing internal combustion engines from gasoline and diesel vehicles, followed by the installation of an in-house manufactured electric motor. During this process, specialists equip the cars with a traction battery, an inverter, a battery management system, and other necessary components.

The organization believes that these modifications may attract interest from corporate clients and private individuals looking to rejuvenate their vintage cars.

However, it is important to note that «Avtotor’s» developments are currently in an experimental phase due to the lack of regulatory framework in Russian legislation concerning such modifications.

The VAZ-2101 «Zhiguli» was produced at the Volga Automobile Plant from 1970 to 1988. This model, based on the Fiat 124, was the first in the «classic» lineup of VAZ vehicles. In the 1970s, the plant produced an experimental electric vehicle version known as the VAZ-2801.

Last fall, the company «AvtoVAZ» initiated serial production of the Lada e-Largus electric vehicle, with prices starting at 3 million rubles. Both a passenger five-seater and a commercial two-seater version are available. The e-Largus has a driving range of up to 420 km.
