SWIFT has selected the Linea L2 network from ConsenSys for a pilot initiative aimed at transferring interbank messaging and communications to the blockchain. This news was reported by The Big Whale.

According to sources from the publication, the decision followed several months of discussions to ensure that the L2 solution could effectively replace the existing centralized infrastructure of the SWIFT network.

More than ten banks, including BNP Paribas and BNY Mellon, will participate in the experiment. The partners intend not only to test the new messaging system but also to explore the integration of stablecoins.

“A few months will be needed before the project becomes widely known, but it promises a significant technological transformation for the international interbank payments industry,” said a spokesperson from one of the institutions.

As reported by The Big Whale, SWIFT is also developing an «interbank token.»

The publication believes that the consortium’s interest in blockchain stems from the technology’s potential to provide greater speed, transparency, and programmability in payment processing. Journalists have linked the choice of Linea to the network’s focus on transaction privacy.

“At this stage, it is a research pilot project, but it is already mobilizing a small group of leading financial institutions that see it as an opportunity to prepare for a potential transformation of the global payment infrastructure,” they emphasized.
