Trump Engages in Talks with Putin for Major Economic Agreements Amidst Conflict Resolution Efforts

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin are in talks regarding significant economic agreements as part of their discussions on bringing an end to the conflict initiated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

«I am engaged in serious negotiations with President Vladimir Putin of Russia aimed at concluding the war, as well as discussing substantial economic development projects between the United States and Russia. The discussions are progressing very positively!» Trump shared via his Truth Social platform.

This statement was made following a conference call with French President Emmanuel Macron and other G7 leaders at the White House, marking the third anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion.

European allies of Washington are rushing to adapt to the sudden changes in U.S. policy since Trump assumed office last month.

After three years of consistent support from the U.S. and Europe for Ukraine’s resistance against Russia, Trump has begun negotiations with Moscow for a resolution—while it remains unclear how much influence Ukraine and European nations will have on the terms of any agreement.

Russia has been facing severe international sanctions, primarily led by former President Joe Biden’s administration in response to its military aggression against Ukraine.

The sanctions would need to be lifted for the potential U.S.-Russia «transactions» that Trump referenced to proceed—a significant win for Putin.

In his message, Trump also emphasized to other G7 leaders his objective of persuading Ukraine to agree to a deal that would provide the U.S. access to its natural resources in exchange for U.S. assistance in any peace negotiations.

«I underscored the importance of the critical ‘Critical Minerals and Rare Earths Deal’ between the United States and Ukraine, which we anticipate will be finalized soon!» Trump noted.

«This agreement, which constitutes an ‘Economic Partnership,’ will ensure that the American public recoups the tens of billions of dollars and military supplies sent to Ukraine while also aiding the growth of Ukraine’s economy as this brutal and savage war comes to a close.»

The G7 call and Macron’s visit to Washington occur as Trump continually questions his commitment to longstanding U.S. alliances, including NATO, established after World War II to protect Western Europe from Soviet expansion.
