The cryptocurrency exchange Gate.io has announced the launch of its own Layer 2 network, Gate Layer. The platform has also optimized the tokenomics of its GT token.

Gate Layer utilizes GateChain as its base layer for calculations. It incorporates GT staking for consensus. This solution is built on the OP Stack and is fully compatible with the EVM.

Among the key advantages of the new infrastructure, developers highlighted:

The Gate Layer ecosystem will feature three primary products: a decentralized exchange for perpetual contract trading named Perp, a platform for creating meme coins called Gate Fun, and a meme tracker called Meme Go.

Within the L2 network, the native token GT will be used to cover transaction fees. The deflationary model of the token, which includes quarterly burns, will be maintained.

The Gate.io team stated that by the end of the second quarter, they had removed 180.5 million GT from circulation—60% of the initial supply.

Simultaneously, developers completed a significant upgrade of GateChain. During this update, they implemented EIP-4844, which added support for BLOB transactions to enhance network throughput, and upgraded the EVM to the Cancun version.

«The launch of Gate Layer, the continuous development of the GateChain blockchain, and the update of GT tokenomics are not just technical steps, but a strategic shift towards building an efficient and accessible Web3 infrastructure,” stated representatives from Gate.io.

The native token did not respond to the announcement. Its price has dropped nearly 1% over the past 24 hours and is trading around $16 at the time of writing.

It is worth noting that the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken launched its L2 network called Ink in December 2024.
