ChatGPT Introduces Break Reminders and Sensitive Interaction Features to Enhance User Well-Being

The AI service ChatGPT has begun to focus on users’ mental well-being and monitor the duration of interactions with people. The chatbot now sends notifications about how long users have been in the app, recommending they take a break.

Additionally, OpenAI has made ChatGPT more cautious and attentive when responding to sensitive and personal inquiries from users. The AI no longer provides direct answers to questions like, “Should I break up with my boyfriend or girlfriend?” Instead, the chatbot helps users weigh the pros and cons so they can make their own decisions.

OpenAI is also working on enabling ChatGPT to better recognize signs of stress or emotional issues in users. If the chatbot detects something concerning, it won’t exacerbate the situation but will direct users to trusted support resources. As part of this initiative, OpenAI has engaged over 90 doctors from 30 different countries to establish guidelines for handling complex psychological conversations with the chatbot.

“We are developing ChatGPT to aid people in growing in all the ways they want to explore. We aim for users to make progress, learn something new, or solve a problem, before returning to their lives. Our goal is not to keep your attention, but to assist you in using it meaningfully. We also understand that AI can feel more responsive and personal than previous technologies, especially for vulnerable individuals experiencing mental or emotional distress,” said OpenAI.
