Dropbox Passwords to Become Read-Only as Service Officially Shuts Down By October 2023

The file hosting service Dropbox has announced the discontinuation of its Dropbox Passwords feature. Starting from August 28, users will only be able to view saved passwords through the mobile app and browser extension, with the ability to add new ones disabled. The mobile app for password management will be turned off on September 11, and by October 28, the entire service, including the dark web monitoring feature, will be fully shut down. All user data will be removed from Dropbox’s servers.

The company suggests that users transition to 1Password and assures them of a «high level of security and encryption» during the migration process. Instructions for this transition have also been provided to users. While users are free to choose another provider, they will need to manage their migration independently.

Interestingly, despite the discontinuation of the password manager, Dropbox has not reduced its subscription prices. The company has not disclosed official reasons for shutting down the service, but it is speculated that it is due to low usage and stiff competition in the password manager market.

Dropbox Passwords was launched in 2020 and was immediately included in the family plan, which currently costs $19.99 per month. It functioned similarly to classic password managers like 1Password and LastPass. Users are advised to complete the transfer of their passwords before October 28, 2025, to prevent data loss.
