OpenAI Introduces Study Mode in ChatGPT: Empowering Students to Think Critically Instead of Providing Direct Answers

On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled a new feature within ChatGPT called Study Mode, designed to assist students in systematically solving problems before arriving at the answers.

As AI-driven chatbots like ChatGPT gain traction, educators have expressed concerns that students may resort to using these tools for copying answers instead of engaging in critical thinking. OpenAI stated that they developed Study Mode as the «initial step on a long journey to enhance the learning experience within ChatGPT.»

«ChatGPT can significantly improve academic performance when tasked with teaching or advising, but using it merely as a response generator can hinder genuine learning,» noted Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice President for Education, during a briefing.

According to OpenAI, one in three students already utilizes ChatGPT, prompting the company to create a learning mode tailored specifically for this demographic. The product will present guiding questions to students instead of direct answers as they tackle homework, prepare for exams, and study new content.

OpenAI released a pre-recorded demonstration showcasing how students can employ Study Mode for homework assistance. After posing a question, students are prompted by ChatGPT to take two actions and articulate their responses in their own words.

OpenAI revealed that the development of Study Mode was done in cooperation with educators, academics, education specialists, and students involved in the ChatGPT Lab program, where groups of college students share insights on their use of OpenAI’s tools.

The announcement of Study Mode comes just days after OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, suggested that artificial intelligence could drastically transform the future of education. Altman, who left Stanford University, speculated that his young son might not pursue a college education.

«I’m already contemplating that college may not be suitable for most people,» Altman remarked in an interview on the podcast This Past Weekend with Theo Von. «I believe everything will look vastly different in 18 years.»

Despite these views, OpenAI remains committed to collaborating with educational institutions. Last year, the company launched ChatGPT Edu—a customized version of the chatbot designed specifically for universities.
