The on-chain activity in the x402 protocol from Coinbase has surged over tenfold in the past month, according to data from Dune.

Between October 20 and 26, a record number of transactions were processed—932,440, totaling $913,888. In comparison, the entire month of September saw only 46,574 transactions.

The count of unique purchasers of x402 assets reached 61,290, while the number of sellers stood at 372.

x402 is a payment tool designed for transactions with stablecoins. It also enables AI agents to conduct autonomous trades.

Coinbase launched this initiative in May. The solution is based on the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which facilitates data exchange between web browsers and servers.

According to KuCoin Ventures, developers have started using the protocol to launch meme coins. CoinGecko has already included a category for coins created on the x402 framework.

The market capitalization of this sector increased by 345% in just one day, reaching $770 million. EingenCloud remains the leader in trading volume, with a market value exceeding $115 million.

«Developers are leveraging the x402 architecture for direct token issuance. […] x402 has become a practical tool— the community is transforming it into a launchpad killer. Exciting new combinations lie ahead,» noted KuCoin Ventures.

Project Abstract programmer Jerrod Watts attributed the rising interest in the protocol to its advantages over conventional payment methods. He explained that traditional methods require constant human involvement: registration, the use of credit cards, and API key management.

x402 eliminates these barriers by integrating payments directly into HTTP requests.

Discussing the emergence of several coins based on x402, the expert highlighted three primary usage scenarios:

«I suspect that in the coming weeks, we will witness a new wave of AI coins. Again, they will likely be utterly nonsensical, but ‘would you rather be right or rich?'» he wrote.

The sudden spike in x402 activity also coincided with the release of a report by a16z forecasting trends for 2025, in which experts identified agent-based artificial intelligence as a key trend, predicting transaction volumes to soar to $30 trillion by 2030.

As a reminder, in August, members of the development team from the American exchange Kevin Lefevre and Lincoln Moore noted that AI agents will become the leading users of Ethereum.
