Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, will invest over $20 billion to expand a data center in Mississippi, USA. This investment will mark the largest private financial commitment in the state’s history, as highlighted by Governor Tate Reeves.

Last year, the demand for data center capacity surged amid the booming artificial intelligence sector. Consequently, the energy systems of developed nations began to face challenges due to the increased load.

On December 30, Musk announced the acquisition of a data center named MACROHARDRR, which is believed to be an ironic nod to Microsoft, given that the name is an antonym to the company’s brand with an added «RR» at the end.

At that time, the billionaire did not reveal specific details, only stating that the facility would enhance xAI’s operational capacity to 2 GW.

According to Governor Reeves, the data center is located in Southaven, near a power plant that the startup also recently purchased. Operations are expected to commence as early as February this year.

In September 2024, xAI launched an AI training cluster called Colossus in Memphis, Tennessee, utilizing 100,000 Nvidia H100 graphics processors, which was considered the largest in the world at the time. Environmentalists accused the data center of worsening ecological conditions due to its use of gas turbines.

In January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced private investments of $500 billion in AI infrastructure. It was planned that the initial funding from the joint venture of OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, named Stargate, would amount to $100 billion, with the expectation of increasing this sum later. Experts raised doubts about the initiative’s ability to attract the claimed capital.

It is worth noting that the completion of the first Stargate data center complex, with a capacity of 1.2 GW, is expected by mid-2026. The facility will accommodate up to 400,000 powerful AI chips from Nvidia.
