The Australian Bitcoin Industry Association (ABIB) has lodged a formal complaint against ABC News over an article concerning the decline of the cryptocurrency market, which allegedly contains «numerous factual inaccuracies» and presents a «one-sided interpretation.»

ABC News, a public broadcaster funded by the Australian government, is the largest media organization in the country. On December 2, journalists published a controversial piece analyzing the recent volatility of digital assets. The article specifically questioned the utility of the first cryptocurrency.

«Created nearly 18 years ago by the enigmatic Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin has failed to fulfill any of its promised objectives and lacks practical applications,» the article states.

The author labeled digital gold as a tool «for those operating in the shadows,» noting that stablecoins like USDT have taken over its role.

The ABIB’s complaint argues that the publication violates the editorial policy and code of conduct of ABC itself.

«The article distorted the purpose of Bitcoin, conflated it with criminal activity, overlooked well-established public information, and relied on sensational language rather than evidence to inform readers,» activists pointed out.

In their correspondence, the group cites every inaccuracy and discrepancy within the piece. ABIB representatives are demanding corrections to these errors.

The organization added that they frequently hear from members of the public, «frustrated by the repeated misrepresentation of cryptocurrency information in Australian media, especially from government entities that are legally obligated to provide accurate and impartial journalism.»

To recall, in September, U.S. President Donald Trump filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times and the book publisher Penguin Random House over attacks on his meme token.
